Torrijas are known worldwide for being a traditional dessert in many Spanish -speaking countries, especially in Spain. The recipe begins with a piece of bread that has been left of breakfast or the previous day, the point of this recipe is to take advantage of the bread that you do not want to throw and the best is when you realize that you can turn it into a very delicious dessert.
As a summary, home torrijas are pancitos that are soaked in milk with cinnamon and sugar, then they batter in egg, to fry them at the end in hot oil .
Where do they originate?
After a long investigation and analyzing some theories that arose around the birth of this recipe, we understood that its true origin is not entirely clear .
- Torrijas are a dessert that was adopted by different cultures throughout its history , it is difficult to define a starting point.
Even so, many theories suggest that its origin is in Roman cuisine.
Let's know its story
This dessert becomes very popular because it is an economic and energy solution of a fast meal. Many families began to prepare for the simple fact of not wanting to throw the bread that began to harden in the cupboard.
They realized that if they soaked the hard bread in milk and then cooked it to decorate it with any sweet, it was very good and that is where the magic began.
With the passage of time, the Torrijas became popular in Spanish cuisine , especially in the period of Lent and Holy Week, for their simple and economic ingredients.

What bread do I need?
Bread is a key point of this recipe, although in general you can look good with any type of flour.
- The most appropriate bread is one that has a dense and consistent crumb.
- As far as possible, be the day before. It is important that the bread is a bit dry, in this way we seek to better absorb milk and egg.
- If the bread is a bit dry, it will help to get rid of during frying.
- Ideally white bread .
In Spain , it is very common to find torrijas made with a characteristic type of bread that they call " Bread of Torrijas ", which has as its main characteristic a dense and firm crumb , this helps to absorb milk and egg better.
In any case, you can always use another type of bread that meets these characteristics.
Where is it advisable to save them?
It is a good idea to save the freshly prepared toast in a hermetic container in the refrigerator, that you want to do toast and save for later. Only in this way, they can be kept fresh for a couple of days.
⚠️ It is not recommended to keep torrijas for more than a week.
Otherwise, it is best to consume them at that time.
Can they be freezed? Yes, you can, and thus last longer. To freeze them it is advisable to wrap them on film or aluminum foil and then in a freezing bag. Frozen can be kept for several months in the freezer.
To defrost : before consuming frozen toasts, we will first take them out of the freezer and leave them like that, at room temperature for a few minutes to recover temperature and their original texture and taste. They could also heat up in the oven or in the microwave for a few seconds.
4 Classic Torrijas recipes
Like the French toast that I published a while ago, this dish is based on a slice of bread that is moistened with some liquid , most of the time it is prepared with milk but we can also find alternatives with syrup or wine. Today we are going to see the versions of Traditional Torrijas in Spain .
Once the recipe has been moistened, the toast continues to rebolated in egg and cooking it either in a pan with oil or in the oven, and then sweeten it with sugar, honey, molasses or other alternatives. To end in most cases cinnamon is used as an aromatizing.
What I like most about the baked torrija recipe is that it does not include anything you don't have at home and are very fun to do. If the whole family participates, I assure you that they will be much richer! Give it a coleguite. What are we going to need? (Put a nice Rosalia theme before starting).
