But ... What is bleeding?
It is an alcoholic beverage formulated based on wine and aromatized with fruits and spices . Typically it is served cold and has been popularized in many countries, especially in Spain and Latin America .
The traditional bleeding recipe includes red wine and sliced fruits apples, pears and oranges , also carries sugar and spices such as cinnamon and nail. Some versions may also include Brandy or Coñac.
- The secret of this drink is to mix the wine with the fruits and let it macerate for a time to mix the flavors.
- After that it is served in a large container with ice.
It is a popular drink at parties and in summer , since it is served cold and is refreshing. It is also common to find it in bars and restaurants in Spain and other Spanish -speaking countries, as we mentioned.
Where is it born? What is your story?
This story is quite controversial and there are several theories about its origin. Some sources report us that bleeding has its roots in ancient Greece, while others argue that it was created by the Romans. The most accepted theory is that it was created in Spain during the Roman times and has become popular in many countries since then.
The word "bleeding" comes from the Spanish term "blood" and refers to the reddish appearance of the drink due to red wine used in its preparation.
Beyond who invented it, today the bleeding has become very popular in many Spanish -speaking countries . It is also popular in other countries in the world and has become an emblematic drink of Spanish and Latin American culture.
Difference between bleeding and summer red
Sangria and summer reds are two alcoholic beverages that share some common characteristics, but also have some important differences.
- Summer red is a popular drink in Spain that is prepared with red wine, lemonade and sliced fruits. Unlike bleeding, summer red does not usually include spices and is served in a glass of ice.
Both drinks are popular on festive sometimes and in summer and can be served in bars and restaurants, but the bleeding is more traditionally associated with Latin American culture while summer red is more typical in Spain.
Classic ingredients that bleed
The classic ingredients that are usually included are:
- Red wine
- Brandy or Coñac
- Sugar
- Fresh fruits cut, such as apples, pears, oranges and/or lemons
- Spices, like cinnamon and nail
- Mineral water or soda
Although some people also add orange or lemon liquor, as well as ice to cool the drink. The proportions of each ingredient can vary according to personal taste.
A tip: it is allowed to leave the limits of this recipe and experiment with fruits and various spices. Sangria is a very versatile drink and we can take advantage of this in our favor, adding or removing fruits and spices according to each other's personal tastes.
It is also good to add other nuts, such as raisins or apricot, to give a different touch to the bleeding.
- There are different combinations of fruits that work well such as apple, pear, orange, strawberries and kiwi . We can also add spices such as cinnamon, nail and ginger to give it a special touch.
How to choose the best wine?
Given that red wine is the main ingredient of this preparation, it is important to use a moderately good one. You can choose the red wine you like best, always avoiding very dry or very sweet wines.
In Argentina we recommend using Malbec because it is a fruity wine and in the bleeding it looks very good.
Some tips for the best wine bleed
To prepare a bleeding, it must be taken into account that fruit cubes must be very small, considering that this is a drink, and is not eaten with a spoon. Then the fruit cubes must be small to better enjoy the drink.
- Something important: do it with time. The tastier bleeding is the one that is allowed to macerate for a while for the flavors to mix. That is why we will leave the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or all night to improve the results.
Sugar is used to sweeten the bleeding and balance the taste. You can always adjust the amount of sugar according to the tastes and needs of each one.
If for some reason you could not consume sugar, there are always sugar substitutes that can be used to prepare the bleeding: such as coconut sugar, palm sugar, stevia and xylitol .
