About chicken flautas

Getting to know chicken flautas, a Mexican delicacy

The chicken used in flautas is cooked with a blend of spices and seasonings that give it a unique and delicious flavor. The tender, juicy meat contrasts perfectly with the crispy texture of the fried tortilla.

The chicken flautas recipe is very popular in Mexican restaurants and is ideal for enjoying at parties , family gatherings, or simply as a fast food craving.

Chicken flautas and their Mexican origin

Chicken flautas, a culinary delicacy of Mexican cuisine, are known for their elongated shape and seasoned chicken filling. In Mexico, a flauta is a traditional Mexican dish that is part of the rich variety of Mexican antojitos .

The flauta gets its name from its elongated, thin shape, resembling a musical flute. This dish is made primarily from stuffed corn tortillas and is characterized by its crispy, golden exterior, achieved by frying them in hot oil.

These flautas are very popular and are commonly served with side dishes such as salsa, guacamole , cream, lettuce and cheese , which add a touch of flavor and freshness to the dish.

Cream for chicken flautas

Flauta cream is an essential accompaniment to this dish. Typically, it's sour cream or Mexican crema, served on the side or poured over the golden flautas to add creaminess and counteract the spiciness of some salsas. The cream softens the bite, balancing textures and offering a pleasant contrast.

Chicken Flautas and Tacos Dorados: Differences and Similarities

Flautas and tacos dorados are two Mexican dishes that share similarities in their appearance and preparation method, but there are key differences that set them apart.

  • Shape and Size : The main difference between flautas and tacos dorados lies in their shape and size. Flautas are elongated cylinders, while tacos dorados are small rolls or curls shaped like tacos.
  • Filling : Both dishes are usually filled with meat, usually chicken, beef, or pork, but flautas often include other ingredients such as cheese, potato, beans, or chili peppers, while tacos dorados usually have a simpler filling, often just meat.
  • Preparation : Both dishes are prepared by frying in hot oil, which gives them their characteristic golden and crispy exterior. However, the way the ingredients are rolled is different. Flautas are rolled tightly, while tacos dorados are folded before frying, creating a more traditional taco shape.
  • Sides : Flautas are typically served with a variety of sides such as salsa, sour cream, lettuce, cheese, and avocado. Tacos dorados, on the other hand, are often accompanied by simpler ingredients like onion, cilantro, and salsa.

Chicken flautas and taquitos: different but similar

The differences between chicken tacos and flautas center on several key aspects of these Mexican dishes.

First, their shape and size vary significantly . Taquitos are generally small and coiled into a cylinder, while flautas are more elongated and thinner. This difference in shape gives them a unique appearance.

Another distinction lies in their filling. Chicken taquitos are often filled with a variety of ingredients, from meat to vegetables, while flautas typically have a more specific filling, commonly shredded chicken, although they can include other ingredients such as cheese or beans.

The preparation of these dishes also differs. Both taquitos and flautas are fried in hot oil until golden brown and crispy, but taquitos are rolled more loosely, while flautas are rolled more tightly.
