About Irish Coffee
Discovering the famous Irish coffee
Irish coffee is a famous beverage that combines hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and whipped cream. Irish coffee is a hot alcoholic beverage that has its roots in Ireland and is believed to have been created in the 1940s or 1950s, but has since become an international classic.
Its popularity has grown over the years and it has become an iconic Irish drink. It combines the intensity of coffee with the smooth, distinctive flavor of Irish whiskey, sweetened with sugar and topped with a layer of whipped cream. The combination of ingredients results in a comforting drink with a touch of indulgence.
This coffee is savored slowly to appreciate the combination of flavors: the strong coffee, the hint of Irish whiskey, the sweetness of the sugar, and the smoothness of the whipped cream. The whipped cream on top is absorbed as the coffee is sipped, creating an experience that combines both flavor and texture.
Origin of Irish coffee
Although several people and places are credited with its invention, the exact story behind its origin remains a bit of a mystery. Both Ireland and the United States claim to have been the birthplace of this drink.
One of the most popular stories attributes its invention to chef Joe Sheridan at Foynes Airport in Ireland in the 1940s. It is said that Sheridan added whiskey to cups of hot coffee to comfort passengers arriving on a flight diverted due to bad weather. He then layered whipped cream on top.
At Shannon Airport in Ireland, there is a statue commemorating the creation of Irish coffee at nearby Foynes Airport.
Another version suggests that the drink was created by Irish chef John Mulloy at the Buena Vista Cafe restaurant in San Francisco in the 1950s. According to this story, a group of travelers had ordered “ Irish coffee ” after having tried it at Foynes Airport.
January 25th is National Irish Coffee in Ireland and around the world. This day honors and celebrates this iconic beverage. There are competitions and events where baristas and coffee lovers compete to make the best Irish coffee.
Particularities of the recipe
Irish coffee generally follows the same basic ingredients mentioned above: hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and whipped cream. However, in the case of coffee machines, the process may vary slightly. Some coffee machines are designed to add the whiskey directly to the coffee as it's brewing, and then it can be sweetened and garnished with whipped cream. This allows for faster, more automatic coffee preparation.
Baileys , a famous Irish cream liqueur, is sometimes used as an alternative to whipped cream in Irish coffee. It provides a smooth, creamy flavor that blends well with coffee and whiskey.
Irish whiskey is an essential component of Irish coffee . However, whiskey experts will note that there are many varieties of Irish whiskey available, each with its own flavor profile, which can influence the final result of the Irish coffee.
There are international standards for preparing authentic Irish coffee . In 2017, a recognized recipe was officially established that dictates the proportions and steps for creating the drink.
